Background

The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) has, with the assistance of the Winnipeg River Fisheries Advisory Committee (WRFAC), prepared a Draft Management Plan for the sport fish fishery on the Winnipeg River.

The MNR has recognized the economic, social and environmental status of the Winnipeg River, and has identified it as a 'Specially Designated Water' (SDW). Lakes and rivers identified as SOW's are managed separately from Fisheries Management Zones in recognition of their status and unique management challenges.

The Draft Winnipeg River Fisheries Management Plan is focused on the direct management of major sports fish of the river. However, other social, economic and biological features that impact the river's fisheries have also been considered, such as development of shoreline areas and outreach programs for anglers. In its current draft form, various management options are presented for public review. We are requesting your input on these options in effort to further involve the public and make informed management decisions.
